From the scaffolding, the chimney of the decommissioned coal-fired power station in Esbjerg, which soars 250 metres into the sky, is being dismantled piece by piece.

Denmark’s tallest chimney, standing at 250 metres, is being dismantled in a complex process. It is situated in Esbjerg and has served as a valuable landmark for North Sea sailors ever since it was built.

That is now a thing of the past. The structure is currently being dismantled piece by piece from a suitably tall scaffold in a complex process.

The background to this is the decommissioning of the coal-fired power station on 31 August 2024. Since then, the tower has stood unused. The building materials from which it was constructed, are now to be recycled.

Esbjerg is an important port of call on the North Sea coast for pleasure craft. The town offers good facilities for stocking up and a newly built marina. Of interest to architecture enthusiasts: The harbour building, constructed from timber, was awarded the Danish Wood Award in 2023.
