Dolphins are rare guests in the Baltic Sea.
Sailors spotted two dolphins in the Apenrad Fjord over the Whitsun weekend. Danish whale researcher Carl Kinze confirmed the unusual sighting. The event could indicate changes in the marine mammals' habitat.

How the Online magazine Der Nordschleswiger reportsa sailing family witnessed the unusual visit in the Apenrad Fjord. Nadine Ehrenbrusthoff from the German School and Language Association (DSSV) and her family observed at least two dolphins accompanying their boat for around half an hour on Whit Sunday evening. The sighting took place at around 7 p.m. near Warnitz and Scherriff at the entrance to the Apenrad Fjord as the family was returning from a trip to Dyvig.

Confirmation by whale researchers

Whale researcher Carl Kinze confirmed to the Nordschleswiger after viewing the videos recorded by the family that the animals are definitely common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Kinze emphasised that this sighting in the western Baltic Sea was extremely interesting, as dolphins are a rarity in this area.

Distinguishing features to harbour porpoises

In order to categorise them correctly, it is important to know the differences between dolphins and the more common porpoises. According to Kinze, dolphins are characterised by a sickle-shaped dorsal fin and a pronounced beak. In contrast, harbour porpoises have a more triangular fin and a rounder head shape. Another striking feature of the common dolphin is its four-coloured markings: black back, yellow spots on the sides, light belly and grey tail fin. Harbour porpoises, on the other hand, are black on top and white underneath, with a colouring that Kinze describes as "like being brushed over with a dark-coloured sponge".

Importance for the habitat

The unusual sighting of dolphins in the Apenrad Fjord raises questions about changes to the marine ecosystem in the western Baltic Sea. Although Kinze does not draw any direct conclusions, the presence of these animals, which are normally found in other marine areas, may indicate shifts in food chains or environmental conditions. Such observations can provide marine biologists and environmentalists with valuable clues to larger ecological relationships.

Significance for water sports enthusiasts and nature observers

For sailors, kayakers and other water sports enthusiasts in the region, this rare dolphin sighting offers an additional incentive to keep their eyes open. The opportunity to observe dolphins alongside the local harbour porpoises increases the appeal of excursions on the Apenrad Fjord and in neighbouring waters. At the same time, it emphasises the importance of treating marine wildlife with respect so that such special encounters can continue to take place in the future.
