In May 2025, the Brussels-based International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) introduced a completely revised certification system for marinas. The guidelines for the well-established Blue Star Marina certification have been updated to meet the current needs of marinas, customers and other stakeholders. The system offers a transparent quality assessment with a star rating, comparable to the hotel classification. According to IMCI, the first certifications according to the new catalogue are already underway, and there have also been further enquiries from marinas in various countries.
Blue Star Marina certification helps port operators to optimise their work processes and make their services more efficient. Another advantage is the improved external presentation to stakeholders such as banks, insurance companies and authorities. The system makes it easier for water sports enthusiasts to choose a marina. The "Blue Star Marina" award can be combined with the ISO 13687 series classification for marinas on request, which enables an even more comprehensive quality assessment.
The new cooperation with the ADAC is an important step in the further development of the certification system. Marinas that receive Blue Star certification benefit from preferential presentation in the new ADAC marina catalogue. This promises increased visibility among potential customers. At the same time, ADAC premium customers enjoy discounts in the certification process through "Blue Star Marina". This collaboration creates synergies that benefit both marinas and water sports enthusiasts.
The IMCI was founded in Brussels as an independent certification organisation in order to be a competent partner for the water sports industry worldwide when it comes to certification. The institute has an international network of more than 40 inspectors working in 24 countries and 17 languages. This broad organisation enables the IMCI to carry out certifications on site, overcoming cultural and language barriers.
