They were the "Alex and Taru" of the seventies. Everyone knew the story of the young, pretty woman who met a sailor and set off on a round-the-world voyage with him without further ado. In her book "Komm wir segeln um die Welt", Beate Kammler (today: Kammler-Zimmermann) described the highs and lows of their journey together and literally spoke from the souls of many sailing wives. The book has sold over 400,000 copies and is one of the bestsellers in sailing, and the two are among the German pioneers of round-the-world sailing.
Today, 37 years after sailing around the world on the 38-foot "Manua Kea", Bobby Schenk tracked down the now 75-year-old Peter Kammler and interviewed him for his well-known "Who's who of circumnavigators" column. Kammler has since swapped his sailing yacht for a cattle farm in New Zealand: "Do I regret sailing?" asks Kammler, "Sometimes I do! But inside I know that it's more a desire to relive the old days."
