According to harbour master Flemming Hoffmann Pedersen from the Aabenraa Sejl Club (ASC), 40 to 50 boats were affected. On the phone with YACHT, he reports that all the affected boats were ashore and connected to the power grid. "The perpetrators simply pulled the plugs out of the shore sockets and cut the power cables on the boat side."
It is assumed that the thieves were unable to access the connections on the raised boats or were simply in a hurry. "Cable theft is of course an issue, but without the connections they are not worth much," says Hoffmann Pedersen.
The police involved have so far been in the dark as there are no video recordings. The only clue is the alarm message on an owner's smartphone. This popped up at 02:00 a.m. with the message that the power supply had been interrupted. This is made possible by a smart boat system in which various sensors monitor the ship and trigger alarms via push messages.
According to police spokesman Martin Hess Pedersen, only a few cases have been reported. No wonder, as a successful manhunt is rather unlikely as there is no description of the perpetrators and it is not clear how many people were involved. The police are hoping for information from the public to help them solve the brazen theft.
