When Joshua Slocum set off to sail around the world in 1895, he unfortunately did not have a film camera on board. Thanks to the American makers of extraordinary animated films, Peter and Sandra Fierlinger, sailing fans can now accompany the first single-handed circumnavigator on his adventurous journey.
The couple, themselves passionate sailors, illustrated and animated Slocum's journey themselves over a period of five years. Slocum's book "Sailing Alone Around the World" from 1900 served as the basis, resulting in four half-hour animated films set to music.
The films show the bearded captain during sailing manoeuvres, his life on board, the fight against pirates, violent storms and also insights into his life after the voyage.
