There are certainly more appealing destinations than a barren rock in the rough northern North Sea, roughly halfway between the Orkney Islands and the Shetland Islands. And yet Hamburg sailor Jochen Winter is drawn there. Not just since yesterday, but for many years.
He has passed the rock under sail several times in the past. However, he has never been able to set foot on land. As an outsider, you get the impression that with every failed attempt to reach Fair Isle, Winter's desire to get there grows.
And finally the time has come. He brought his "Morning Haze", a Bestevaer 55 aluminium yacht perfectly suited to the high latitudes, to Scotland. From there, he set off in the summer of 2016. He sets course for the destination of his dreams via the Orkneys.
Read on to find out what awaits him there and whether his dreams and ideas will become realityin the new YACHT (issue 6/2017, available now at newsagents and as a digital edition).
