17 yachts, seven nations, 27,000 nautical miles: the first sailing race around the globe takes place in 1973. But when Great Britain called for the first Whitbread Round the World Race, not only the most renowned international sailing teams took part, but also an underdog: Ramón Carlín, who had never before taken part in a race with his brand new yacht. The 50-year-old Mexican sets off on his journey with his family, a scrappy crew and little experience. Initially derided by the press as the laughing stock of the race, Carlín becomes the unexpected favourite. THE WEEKEND SAILOR tells the legendary story of a man who was underestimated by the (sailing) world.
