For many, it sounds like the ultimate yearning for freedom: getting on your own boat, leaving everyday life behind and discovering Europe from a completely new perspective. This is exactly what YACHT volunteer Antonia von Lamezan and her partner Lukas Hoppe dared to do. In the 70th episode of YACHT - the sailing podcast of their dream, which they realised.

Antonia von Lamezan and Lukas Hoppe lived in Berlin before finally realising their dream after a long period of planning and saving. They bought a Malö 40 and prepared for the adventure. But instead of acting rashly, they took their time - not only when choosing a boat, but also when looking for ways to combine a job and a sailing life. In this episode, you can find out how they managed this and what happened to their flat in Berlin.

Antonia von Lamezan and Lukas Hoppe were surprised several times

Their journey began in the Baltic Sea and took them through the European canals to the Mediterranean. They travelled to Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Greece, among other places. Antonia talks about what it was like travelling through European cities, especially by boat, and how they dealt with the locks. She also reveals a special experience in the episode. But life at sea is not only characterised by sunny serenity: Nights with storms and burst fenders on the rough quay presented Antonia and Lukas with challenges. In a critical situation, they learnt valuable lessons and report on some drastic experiences and night-time surprises.

When they returned ashore, they found it difficult to say goodbye, but at the same time it was nice to have friends and family close by again. The young couple also give an insight into their relationship on board and ashore. In our sailing podcast, the two sailors talk about how their return went and whether they are drawn to the water again.

What happens now?

They explain why it's important to get going, even when excuses seem obvious, and why the courage to leave your comfort zone is worth the risk. The YACHT volunteer and her partner also share the mistakes they would avoid today. And what will happen to the "Eleanor" when the couple are back in Germany? Find out in today's episode.
