Wolfgang "Gangerl" Clemens turned his back on his Bavarian country life many years ago to satisfy his thirst for adventure and retreat from civilisation in the Caribbean.
Recently, a film team led by producer Thomas Wittmann accompanied the 83-year-old on his sailing yacht for three months. The result is the documentary film "Ausgsting.", which takes the audience on an authentic journey - not only to the dangers, but also behind the scenes of the shared sailing adventure.
The film is not a classic portrait of a hero. Instead, you can feel the conflicts, tensions and challenges that community life in a confined space brings with it. The team shows moments that go to the limits of what is bearable - such as an accident in the Seychelles when "Gangerl's" boat ran aground on a reef. But there are also philosophical insights: the circumnavigator talks openly about his reasons for breaking out of a village in Bavaria and seeking freedom at sea.
In addition to "Gangerl", the filmmakers also have their say in the podcast. Thomas Wittmann explains how the focus has shifted over time: From a pure portrait to a film about filmmaking itself. The collaboration was characterised by improvisation and challenges.
Particularly exciting: why Gangerl prefers to be alone at sea and how important the need for freedom is in his life. In this podcast episode, the guests share their thoughts on happiness, courage and the limits of human resilience.
