Anyone who has ever felt seasick while sailing knows the paralysing feeling: suddenly adventure and team spirit are out of the question and the body switches to emergency mode. But what exactly is behind seasickness? Psychologist Thomas Bickhardt, an experienced sailor and pioneer in researching the causes, talks about this in the 57th episode of YACHT - the sailing podcast.

Home remedies and tips for seasickness have been circulating for decades: tablets, ginger, plasters, the famous "look at the horizon" - and of course the do-gooder phrase: "It'll pass." But what if these approaches only treat the symptoms and don't get to the root cause?

Thomas Bickhardt is researching this topic. Born in Norway, he is a psychologist, experienced sailor and has been a pioneer in researching the causes of seasickness for over 30 years. In an interview with our host Timm, he explains how he came to this field of research and which research approaches he is pursuing.

The cause of seasickness

His approach is fundamentally different from the usual: instead of targeting symptoms such as nausea or dizziness, Thomas Bickhardt focuses on the actual cause - which he reveals in this episode. The expert explains in detail what kind of thinking error prevails in our heads and how the nervous system reacts to it.

The good news: the body can be trained. Thomas Bickhardt's holistic method has shown amazing results. Through targeted exercises, the nervous system is "retrained" so that it no longer switches to self-protection mode. In the podcast, the psychologist explains how you can prepare for seasickness on land and which exercises are used in his seminars. Of course, traditional remedies are also discussed. The psychologist explains the advantages and disadvantages of tablets, who is allowed to take them and what side effects need to be considered. If you would like to find out more and perhaps free yourself from seasickness, you can find out the background and tips in this podcast episode.
