Spending six months of parental leave on a sailing boat - sounds exciting, but raises a lot of questions: How is life with a baby organised in a confined space? How should the travel plans be adapted? And what safety precautions are particularly important for young families on board?
In an interview with podcast host Timm Kruse, Michael Rinck talks about his special time out. Together with his wife and their then newborn son, he spent six months on board a sailing yacht. The test and technology editor explains important aspects of the planning, such as why they specifically chose shorter daily stages in calmer waters and how they set up safe areas on the boat.
However, in addition to these logistical and safety challenges, the adventure was also about personal realisations: "After six months at sea, we realised much more clearly what really counts in life: Time for each other and a conscious reduction to the essentials," reports Rinck. The return to land required a significant change to everyday life.
Another important note from the sailor concerns the boat size and equipment. A family-friendly amount of space makes everyday life much more relaxed. One of the many practical pieces of advice for parents who want to sail with small children: "Plan enough breaks and avoid overly ambitious daily routes."
Michael Rinck is already looking ahead to future sailing adventures - with a conscious balance between everyday working life and family time. He also reveals his most important piece of advice to other sailing-enthusiastic parents in this episode. Want to find out more about this extraordinary parental leave? Then you should definitely listen in!
