Timm Kruse explains how he came up with the idea of obtaining this demanding certificate. Certain changes in the law also play a role. What do you need to be a Yachtmaster Offshore? The sailor explains that in addition to sound sailing experience, formal requirements are also necessary. Not only certificates are required, but also solid experience and logbook evidence.
The training and exam in Malta were intensive. First a week of theory under the guidance of skipper Leon Schulz, then a week of practical training on a Bavaria. The programme ran from morning to night, including night sailing and challenging manoeuvres. In this episode, Timm Kruse tells us which tasks and manoeuvres he found particularly challenging.
The practical exam was in English, which required additional concentration. In addition to navigation, communication, crew management and the ability to remain calm under pressure had to be demonstrated. Particular attention was paid to clear instructions, social interaction and the question of how a skipper not only masters manoeuvres, but also confidently integrates crew and examiners.
In addition to new insights, the aspect of leaving his own comfort zone also played an important role for him. The episode provides an exciting insight into the personal experiences, challenges and special requirements of the Yachtmaster Offshore. Anyone who wants to find out more about the path to becoming a Yachtmaster, tips for the exam and everyday life as a skipper will gain authentic insights and motivation in this episode.
