These awards are presented every year as part of the Flagship Night at boot Düsseldorf and bring the water sports world together. The origins of the Sailing Oscars date back to the 2000s, when it was originally planned to determine the winners by means of a voting card. However, the process did not work out. Podcast host Timm Kruse finds out why it failed and which new method has prevailed.
In this episode of the podcast, YACHT editor and inventor of the Sailing Oscars, Jochen Rieker, talks about the failure of the process back then and its success today and provides insights behind the scenes: In which categories is the prize awarded? What aspects are taken into account in the assessment? How many yachts are judged?
Expert Jochen Rieker also takes stock - which shipyards have won with which yachts in recent years, what characterises the yachts and which factors are decisive for a win. The final decision is made together with other experts from leading European sailing magazines, which is not always easy and triggers strong emotions among the nominees at the Flagship Night. The most exciting question is which sailing yachts will win the race this year and receive a sailing Oscar. You will find the answer in episode 3.
