Home game in Kiel: Boris Herrmann speaks in the 45th episode of YACHT - the sailing podcast with host Timm Kruse about the preparations for the second edition of The Ocean Race Europe. On 10 August, the skipper will start with his team Malizia and compete against six other teams.

In an interview with Timm Kruse, Boris Herrmann makes it clear how close The Ocean Race Europe is to his heart - it is his last race with the boat that he has put "so much heart and soul" into. The Malizia's mission is clear: to win, finish at least on the podium and show everything once again before Herrmann takes off with a new boat that is currently being built.

The team and the challenges

All teams are international. On board Team Malizia: Will Harris (GBR), Cole Brauer (USA), Francesca Clapcich (ITA/USA), Justine Mettraux (SUI), Loïs Berrehar (FRA) - and Boris Herrmann as skipper. He emphasises that every day counts in regattas like this and that "very small details make all the difference". The awareness of the challenge is great: wind and weather conditions along the European coast are constantly changing. Boris Herrmann explains what rules need to be observed and what his biggest concern is.

Despite years of experience, the 44-year-old is honest: the "tingling in the stomach" and the respect for such a race at sea remain. Particularly in the start phase, when the seven Imocas meet at high speed in the Kiel Fjord, maximum concentration is required, as he explains in the podcast.

How Boris Herrmann prepares himself

In addition to the long stretches at sea, Herrmann relies on intensive training - also on land. In the podcast, he provides insights into exactly how this works so that he and his team are optimally prepared for all situations. Germany's sailing star also provides an answer to the question of how he mentally prepares for the demanding races. He will also reveal to listeners what his plans are for the coming years.

Environmental protection in sailing

The skipper also addresses the age aspect: Sailors often reach their peak performance in their mid-40s and two factors are particularly decisive here.

The topic of environmental protection also comes up. Boris Herrmann, who is committed to sustainable sailing, is looking for ways to minimise the consumption of resources and make improvements within his own scope of action. In this podcast episode, he explains how this works at The Ocean Race Europe and other regattas.
