Family circumstances played a major role in this: Morten's brother Timo lived on the Hanseat for two years. He spent one of those years in the Caribbean - until the birth of his child approached and Timo flew to Germany. Finally, the question arose: how would the sailing boat actually get to Germany? Morten saw this as an opportunity to realise his dream of crossing the Atlantic. So he and his brother planned the transfer from the USA to Germany.
The flight tickets to Florida were booked and we boarded the boat. Morten describes the boat as a microcosm that becomes home during the journey. He tells how they crossed the Atlantic on the sailing boat: from Miami, to South and North Carolina, via the Azores to Europe.
The brothers particularly enjoyed their stop in South Carolina for several reasons. The differences between the areas are clear to see. Morten reports on the stopovers in the Azores and the onward journey through the English Channel to Cuxhaven and the various challenges they faced.
In the conversation between host Timm and Morten, it becomes clear what it is like to cross the Atlantic in such a confined space, to share the space and to overcome the organisational challenges. The sailor provides insights into technical problems on board - what broke down and how they dealt with it. He also gives tips on clearing in and out and reveals how entry into the USA works under the current policy.
The YACHT editor explains how the supplies on board were organised and goes into the planning of the long-distance trip and whether everything worked out as the brothers had hoped. The moments when nervousness arose are also exciting: Morten and Timo experienced a storm with winds of up to 46 knots. What do they need to bear in mind and how did they get through this phase? Morten describes this very impressively in this episode.
The arrival in Cuxhaven, where family and friends give the brothers a well-deserved welcome, is particularly emotional. Morten describes the joy of reuniting with family and friends and finding his way back ashore. "The feeling of having solid ground under your feet again is hard to put into words."
Find out whether Morten would do another Atlantic crossing and whether there is more to read about the journey by sailing boat in the episode "#47 A dream comes true: Atlantic crossing on 34 feet".
