NDR portrait of the Franco-German Vendée participant Isabelle Joschke
NDR has portrayed the German-French Vendée participant Isabelle Joschke in a half-hour programme. A touching programme about a strong sailor on her way to the summit of the Mount Everest of the sea, as she herself calls the Vendée Globe. You can watch the programme here.

The media centre says: "I would call it magic." Isabelle Joschke, professional ocean sailor, German-French, only 1.60 metres tall, but incredibly tough and strong-willed, experiences uniquely beautiful moments on the toughest sailing race around the world. Alone on board, once around the globe, around 45,000 kilometres, past the Cape of Good Hope, along the Antarctic, Australia and Cape Horn, but there are also low points on many of the 85 days on the high seas. Damage to the boat, loneliness, doldrums, storms and waves as high as houses. Joschke fights his way through.

Big interviews with Isabelle Joschke

Joschke has also given YACHT deep insights into her inner life. In interviews with Tatjana Pokorny and Andreas Wolfers, the single-handed sailor enthused about what others consider to be hardships. "Everything, really," the petite woman replied when asked what she likes so much about sailing alone on the wide open sea. "You feel much closer to the ocean, the weather, the wind, you feel every change more intensely. When several people sail together, you just chat. Alone on the ocean, however, I am very small and quiet and experience nature in all its fullness without hindrance. I love sailing because of moments like these."

In the interview, Isabelle Joschke says, among other things:

I'd much rather be out there alone than in pairs."

What exactly is so nice about being alone? "Everything, actually. You feel much closer to the ocean, the weather, the wind, you feel every change more intensely. When several people are sailing together, you just chat. Alone on the ocean, however, I am very small and quiet and experience nature in all its fullness without hindrance. I love sailing because of moments like these."
