Otto Protzen lived in Berlin from 24 March 1868 to 22 July 1925 and was only 57 years old. During his lifetime, he was an exceptional figure in Berlin, both as a sailor and as an artist.
He won the Kieler Woche six times in the special class and rowed successfully in the Gig. As a graphic artist, he was a landscape draughtsman, etcher and illustrator. As an author, he wrote travelogues about numerous sailing trips on German rivers and was co-author and illustrator of the two-volume manual "The Art of Sailing". Protzen was co-founder of the magazine "Die YACHT". As a designer, he created successful regatta yachts, dinghies, ice yachts and houseboats.
In memory of this pioneer of German sailing and to mark the 100th anniversary of his death, an exhibition has been organised in the rooms of the Seglerhaus on the initiative and under the direction of former DSV President Rolf Bähr, presenting the life and work of Otto Protzen. The vernissage will take place on Friday, 25 July 2025 at 17:00.
