It's a small announcement on the website, but it's evidence of a revolution: Hallberg-Rassy is turning its back on teak decking! The Swedes are one of the last shipyards to offer only genuine teak for decking. But that is now a thing of the past. Shipyard boss Magnus Rassy has also decided to replace the outlawed precious wood from Myanmar.
Rassy is now offering its yachts with polyurethane decking from Ecodeck in Holland. The material not only looks like wood, but is also very easy to work with. The solid components typical of Rassy, such as the bulwarks, are therefore no problem. It is also said to be more durable and easier to maintain than the usual PVC decking. However, teak will still be available from Rassy as a special option.
Hallberg-Rassy is not alone in its decision to offer alternatives to teak decking. Saffier and Sirius, for example, moved away from wood years ago. And almost all well-known shipyards are about to take this step - from luxury brands such as Nautor's Swan to the world's largest sports boat manufacturer, the Beneteau Group.
The last yachts with teak decks will be delivered by the French company this year, while the purchasing and technical departments are already examining alternatives. A product developer confirmed to YACHT last week that Beneteau intends to completely dispense with teak from next year onwards.
