The Croatian Adriatic, Europe’s most popular yachting destination, has a side that many crews underestimate. On the night of 19 July 2026 A Nevera wreaked havoc in Potkujni Bay on the Croatian island of Unije. Several sailing yachts were thrown onto the rocks; south of Cape Kamenjak, a sailing yacht with an Austrian crew was shipwrecked. This is not an isolated incident. On 16 June 2025, for example, severe storms on the Croatian Adriatic coast. The west coast of Istria, including the holiday resort of Rovinj, was particularly hard hit. Gusts of up to 110 km/h caused considerable damage and left several people injured.
In every case, the cause was sudden, severe storms. Anyone who is familiar with the three most dangerous winds in the Adriatic, understands how they form and knows how to recognise them in good time can avoid such scenarios.

The Bora, known as the Bura in Croatian, is a dry, cold downwind blowing from the north-east. Polar cold air accumulates inland behind the Dinaric Alps and rushes down towards the warmer Adriatic Sea as a heavy, dense air mass. Its strength is determined by the pressure gradient between the hinterland and the sea.
What makes the Bora particularly dangerous for crews is that its gusts far exceed the average wind speed. According to its own records, the Croatian Meteorological Service (DHMZ) recorded a peak gust of 248 kilometres per hour at the Maslenica Bridge near Zadar on 21 December 1998.
Sailors distinguish between two types. The so-called ‘Black Bora’ is of cyclonic origin and arrives with clouds; cumulus clouds forming over the coastal hilltops are its typical harbinger. The ‘White Bora’, on the other hand, arrives in bright sunshine and high atmospheric pressure. It is this type in particular that takes inexperienced crews by surprise, as the fine weather gives no cause for caution.
The best-known Bora wind corridors in Croatia are the Velebit Channel, the Senjska vrata south of Senj, and the Vinodolski Channel. In the Istria and Kvarner region These hotspots are most densely concentrated here; narrow channels and high mountain passes intensify the jet effect. In winter, the bora can blow for several days; in summer, a bora spell usually lasts one to two days. Bays at the foot of the mountains offer no safe shelter: channelling effects can expose them to stronger winds than open sections of the coast.
The Jugo, also known as the Scirocco or Široko, blows from the south to south-east. It is warm and humid, bringing cloud, rain and poor visibility. As it sweeps across the entire length of the Adriatic, it builds up a swell which persists for hours even after the wind has died down and can cause rough conditions in anchorages and moorings.
Although the Jugo can also reach gale force, according to the DHMZ it blows more steadily and with fewer gusts than the Bora. In the southern region stretching from Split to Dubrovnik This is the area most frequently affected by strong winds; although the Bora also blows there, the weather service estimates that it is weaker than in the Kvarner. In summer, the Jugo occurs less frequently, whilst in the early and late seasons it often alternates with the Bora.
A typical pattern: the air pressure drops rapidly and the Jugo picks up. When the pressure then rises again and the skies clear from the north, the next Bora sets in. According to the DHMZ, it can reliably forecast both the Bora and the Jugo.
The Nevera or Neverin is not, meteorologically speaking, a classic Adriatic wind, but rather a local thunderstorm. It usually forms over the Apennine Peninsula and crosses the Adriatic from the west. Conventional weather reports often do not pick it up until it is already close by.
According to SeaHelp, the breakdown service operating in the Adriatic, the Nevera is regarded, based on years of operational experience, as the most dangerous wind in the entire area. It sets in suddenly with gusts reaching gale force, can change direction without warning, and subsides after a maximum of 45 minutes, accompanied by torrential downpours. According to the service, typical scenarios include torn-off buoys, damage to yachts and capsized boats.
Anyone who keeps an eye on a lightning detection app in summer has an advantage: thunderstorm cells moving from Italy towards the Adriatic Sea are a reliable early warning sign. The safest course of action is to head for a harbour or a well-sheltered bay in good time.

The DHMZ Marine Forecast for Small Vessels provides daily updated marine weather forecasts for the Croatian Adriatic, broken down by coastal sections, including gust warnings, sea state data and hazard levels. It is the most reliable source of information for the Bora and Jugo; however, even this forecast cannot always detect the Nevera in good time. It is also advisable to use a lightning detection app with real-time data.
