In recent years, similar reports have mostly been a precautionary measure. This winter, there are many indications that skippers in the region will actually have to expect restrictions due to ice formation.
Background of the official warning is the prolonged period of frost in the north of Germany. As temperatures remain permanently in the minus range, the first solid ice is already forming, especially in shallow and sheltered waters and in the bays.
The WSA recommends that these areas should only be navigated with ice-strengthened vessels - a requirement that ordinary pleasure craft do not usually fulfil. Anyone who nevertheless has their yacht in the water or is currently travelling in the area should check the navigability of harbours, approaches and shallow waters on a daily basis.
Navigation is also not unaffected by the current ice conditions. The WSA expressly warns that buoys can drift, be pushed under water or damaged by ice. The numerous buoys in the Baltic Sea already against unlit winter signs The fact that the ships were replaced makes navigation in the affected areas even more difficult.
The situation is likely to get worse next weekend, from 9 to 11 January. Storm Elli will bring wind, snow and icy temperatures. At the same time, there is a risk that the wind will push the ice into harbours and bays. There, the resulting ice pressure threatens to weigh down or damage hulls and jetties.
