There's no need to be afraid of trailering. If you know a few tricks and follow the regulations, you'll be safe and comfortable on the road. And even have fun in the end

In this special:

There are a large number of boats that can be transported on a trailer. Marinas on inland waterways are often dominated by yachts between six and eight metres in length. You would therefore expect to see a large number of boat trailers travelling close together in the right-hand lane of the motorway every weekend in summer. This is all the more true as there are no Sunday driving bans for towing a trailer with a car under 7.5 tonnes.

Smaller and lighter boats offer a decisive advantage over larger and heavier yachts: They enable a quick and, with a little practice, easy change of sailing area. What is normally only possible with a rented yacht - sailing in a completely new area, be it in another country or on another lake - can be experienced by trailer boat owners with their own boat. A pleasant additional effect is the considerable cost saving and the avoidance of unpleasant experiences with an unfamiliar yacht. In addition, the owner's own boat is utilised efficiently and does not spend unnecessary time unused at the jetty when the owner gets wanderlust.

And yet, boat combinations are relatively rare on the road. This is hardly due to a lack of desire to travel. It is more likely that most owners have too much respect for trailers. Slipping, laying the mast, equipping the towing vehicle and trailer in accordance with the regulations - some people find this too complicated. Admittedly, travelling by car with a boat in tow is no pure pleasure.

This trailer special aims to change that. We explain driving behaviour, regulations, give tips and provide information. This makes the journey an experience in itself - you can gain your first impressions of the landscape and immerse yourself in your new territory at your leisure.
