As part of the As part of the "Maritime Safety Days", the water police have been checking recreational boaters in the federal states of Lower Saxony, Bremen, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since Ascension Day (9 May). NDR published a report on the event - the analysis of the police checks follows

During the Maritime Safety Days, the waterway police organised a Traffic control on the water. Certificates of competence such as driving licences and radios as well as up-to-date nautical charts were checked.

Offences recorded for several sailors during police checks

Several sailors were checked during the inspections. One sailor was fined 100 euros because his nautical chart was out of date. "The routes on the water are constantly changing, so the nautical charts must always be up to date to ensure safety at sea," explained the water police officer. Another sailor was accused of missing his home harbour and the name of his ship. He also had no paper charts on board. This led to less understanding on the part of the skipper.

Motorboats were also inspected during the police checks, but no offences were detected during the NDR recording. The water police emphasise the importance of complying with safety regulations in order to avoid accidents and dangers on the water.

We will publish a detailed evaluation of the Maritime Safety Days at the weekend.
