Water sports enthusiasts and fishermen have been worried about restrictions since the failed plans for a Baltic Sea national park. Here is a photo from the protest event "Der Sund wird bunt" ("The Sound becomes colourful") on 30 June 2023 in Fehmarnsund.
The state government of Schleswig-Holstein has launched the so-called participation procedure, in which comments can be submitted on the intended establishment of the nature conservation areas Geltinger Bucht to Schleimündung, southern Howachter Bucht and western Fehmarn.

The plans will remain on public display at the state's Ministry of the Environment until 27 June. During this time, comments can be submitted, which will have to be carefully examined and taken into account when a decision is made on the authorisation.

Procedure prescribed by law

This participation procedure is based on the State Nature Conservation Act and is intended to ensure that the interests of the people affected by the planned measures are taken into account as part of the authorisation process. For example, when nature conservation areas are designated, any landowners are consulted in addition to the nature conservation organisations.

In the case of the planned nature conservation areas on the Baltic Sea, the ministry expects comments from the public and "public interest organisations", i.e. municipalities, authorities and public planning bodies.

Anyone can submit their comments

However, "the public" also refers to private individuals or interest groups. The ministry's website states:

"The public exhibition will take place from 27 May 2025 to 27 June 2025 at the Ministry for Energy Transition, Climate Protection, Environment and Nature of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. During the exhibition period of one month and up to two weeks after the end of the exhibition period Anyone may submit comments to the competent nature conservation authority in writing or for the record."

The statement can be sent as a Word or Libre Office document to the following e-mail address:
