Many sailors underestimate the complexity of insurance - and pay a high price in the event of a claim. In the 58th episode of YACHT - the sailing podcast host Timm Kruse and Pantaenius expert Dirk Ammann talk in plain language about pitfalls, small print and curious claims.

It's a topic that most sailors tend to ignore: Insurance. The subject seems too complex, too dry and too obscure to many boat owners. But anyone who is negligent here exposes themselves and their hobby to uncontrollable risks. This is precisely where the podcast episode comes in, in which Timm Kruse delves into the world of yacht insurance together with Dirk Ammann from Pantaenius.

It all depends on the conditions

Dirk Ammann, who has been working in the industry for many years, describes topics from his own experience in the podcast: Many sailors rely on fine-sounding marketing promises or simply choose the cheapest provider. In his view, this is a fatal mistake, as comparisons are extremely difficult when it comes to insurance. "You should know what you're buying," emphasises the expert and urges you to take a close look at the insurance conditions - especially the often ignored small print.

Case studies in the podcast

Our expert goes through specific case studies: What happens when you buy a second-hand ship? What do you have to watch out for with "standing cargo"? And what does the term "initial unseaworthiness" actually mean in the insurance conditions? The Pantaenius expert not only gives advice on buying a boat. He admits that he is always surprised at how carelessly some people set off with their boat.

DIY harbours risks

The popular do-it-yourself trend is also critically scrutinised. Do-it-yourself repairs on your own boat may be tempting for keen hobbyists, but can become a problem when it comes to claims settlement. Dirk Ammann explains where insurance has its limits and what damage is actually not covered.

The podcast episode not only provides specialist knowledge, but also entertaining stories from everyday insurance life - from curious claims to cases on the high seas.
