Goes quite high into the wind: Elvstrøm's Code Permanent Hoist
The new sail can remain rolled up, which simplifies handling when travelling. This required a new cut and a different cloth

The so-called Code Permanent Hoist has been developed by Elvstrøm for cruising sailors who want to combine maximum performance with a high level of operating comfort. The sail combines a high-cut downhaul genoa in the style of a Yankee with a Code Zero. The sail has a slightly flatter cut and is narrower than a typical Code Zero. This and the slightly stiffer material mean that the cloth wraps more tightly and with less resistance. It should not flutter when rolled up and should be less disruptive in the harbour during mooring manoeuvres. The fabric is specially protected against UV radiation. It is a polyester fabric with ripstop and is reinforced on one side with a film that is UV-protected.

The idea: the sail is set and unfurled in the harbour when the angle of incidence and apparent wind speed are right. The operating range covers 50 to 120 degrees of true wind angle and five to 13 knots of true wind speed on the wind and up to 20 knots of wind on deep courses.

The sail should not be damaged without a tarpaulin and can therefore remain hoisted for several days. The Code Permanent Hoist is equipped with an anti-torsion cable and is rolled up conventionally from bottom to top, like a genoa.

In the foot, the sail is usually 1.7 times as long as the J-measurement (forestay on deck to leading edge of mast), i.e. larger than a maximum genoa, and can be adapted to existing winding systems of a top-down spinnaker or code zero.

A price example: The Code Permanent Hoist for a modern 38-foot yacht costs 3900 euros including AT cable. Available from Elvstrøm and their Dealer.
