Scratches, holes or other imperfections in painted surfaces can be easily repaired. Here we show you how using the example of a Dehlya 25. Even the smallest chips in the paintwork can be made invisible in a similar way. Simply brush on the paint and, if it does not cover immediately, apply another coat within the touch-up interval.
For the professional Awlgrip yacht paint used in the original paint job, there is a so-called touch-up kit especially for minor repairs. The viscosity of this kit is slightly more viscous than for spray painting so that it is easier to work with a brush. If such a kit is not available from another manufacturer, the smallest container of the paint must be ordered. This can even be cheaper than the Awlgrip kit, but with larger cans you usually have a lot of paint left over; as this can only be used for a few years, it must then be disposed of as hazardous waste.
It is best to order the refinish from the same manufacturer in the same RAL colour as the original paint. This is the best way to ensure that no colour differences are visible later on. However, if the original paint has been exposed to environmental influences for some time, its colour may have changed slightly. In this case, visible differences can hardly be avoided or only with a lot of trial and error.
As only very little paint is needed for small repairs, here is a tip: For two-component paints, use one syringe each for mixing the base and hardener. This allows even small quantities to be dosed precisely and the syringes can be cleaned and reused as the components do not come into contact with each other.
In the YACHT webinar "Painting - but the right way!" we explain in detail how to give your hull, deck and fittings a new shine. YACHT editor and technical expert Hauke Schmidt not only deals professionally with everything you need to know about yachts and boats - as a long-standing owner and author of specialised books, he is also very familiar with refit and winter work from his own experience. In the webinar on13.02.2024 he explains, among other things, how to choose the right paint system, how to optimally prepare the substrate and how to achieve the best results.
Larger damage, on the other hand, should be left to a professional, such as the scratches on the hull of the Dehlya caused by a fallen ladder. You can see the effort that the professionals at Peter Wrede Yachtrefit put into such repairs in the photo gallery below.
