The sperm whale emerges in the wake
Frenchman Kito de Pavant had to abandon his boat at the last Vendée Globe. It sank after a collision. Video evidence: it was a sperm whale

In the middle of the Southern Ocean, the Frenchman Kito de Pavant collided with what was previously described as a UFO, an Unidentified Floating Object. The analysis of the video footage, which was automatically recorded by the on-board cameras, has now provided an explanation. Apparently, the boat collided with a sperm whale, which can be clearly recognised in one sequence.

De Pavant himself could not see him as he was below deck at the time of the collision. The keel was torn from its mountings and the boat took on water. De Pavant was rescued by a tanker that happened to be in the vicinity.
