Everyone had a go: that's one of many results from this Volvo Ocean Race. Apart from Team Vestas Wind, everyone else has now won at least one leg, but Vestas Wind has only crossed the finish line three times. Team Alvimedica had already won the first part of this ninth and final leg, which had a one-day break in The Hague, and held on to its lead to the finish. The entrance to Gothenburg once again turned into a foul weather thriller, with the boats bobbing along at zero speed at times.
The final leg did nothing to change the podium positions. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing wins ahead of Team Brunel and Dongfeng Race Team. This is the first time a British skipper has won the overall title. "I was very confident at the start of the race," said skipper Ian Walker. "But there are 100 ways you can lose this race, but only one way to win it. But it went perfectly for us."
On Saturday 27 June, the 12th Volvo Ocean Race will finally come to an end with the In-Port Race. This coastal race will be even more exciting. In the overall standings, Team Alvimedica and Mapfre are tied in fourth and fifth place. Whoever is ahead of the other in the In-Port Race standings will also be ahead in the overall standings. Alvimedica currently leads Mapfre by two points.
