With a start-to-finish victory, Team Abu Dhabi with helmsman Ian Walker won the first in-port race off the Spanish starting harbour of Alicante and secured the first six points. With a risky zero start in the centre of the line, skipper Walker secured the best starting position and was able to use this to win the race in light, shifty winds. The rest of the order: Puma Ocean Racing (USA), Camper (NZL), Sanya (CHN), Groupama (FRA), Telefónica (SPA).
Due to the difficult conditions, it is hardly possible to draw any conclusions about the performance of the teams. The race will only enter the hot phase next Saturday with the start of the first stage to Cape Town.
Shortly before the In-Port Race, title sponsor Volvo announced the extension of its commitment. The twelfth edition is scheduled to start in autumn 2014. In times of great economic uncertainty, this makes the event one of the few in sailing whose future is secure, at least in the medium term. The reason for this is apparently also the great worldwide acceptance of the regatta. According to the organisers, 66 television stations have acquired rights, more than ever before in the event's 38-year history. They reach 550 million households.
"The global reach makes the Volvo Ocean Race a fantastic platform to build close customer relationships," said Stefan Jacoby, CEO and President of Volvo Car Corporation. He added: "The race is an extremely good investment for us in terms of media exposure, brand visibility and increased sales."
