How many teams will actually take part in the next edition of the Volvo Ocean Race is still up in the air. But one thing is certain: the women's team sponsored by the Swedish hygiene products manufacturer SCA is the most advanced in its preparations. In any case, the pink-coloured racing yacht, the first of the new one-design Volvo Ocean 65 class, is afloat and is now being prepared for handover to the female sailors.
The new boat has already undergone a number of structural and safety tests at the Williams shipyard in Southampton, during which it had to prove, among other things, that it can easily bring itself back upright after a 50-degree heel. "These are important tests for the boat, especially for the keel bulkheads and the support structure," said class manager James Dodd. The rigidity and tightness of the hull were also tested, as were the various engine systems.
Motor sailing on the Solent is planned for today, then the first test under sail tomorrow. The handover to the SCA women's crew is scheduled for next weekend.
