Scallywag skipper David Witt has been shaking up the press conference ahead of the harbour race in Cardiff. Fun for everyone - except Dongfeng and Mapfre

He is and remains an unbent "Aussie" with entertainment qualities and a real "Scallywag": David Witt provided plenty of entertainment and fun at the last press conference in the British harbour city of Cardiff. According to the skipper of the Sun Hung Kai / Scallywag team, he tried to place a 10,000 dollar bet on Team Brunel winning the overall race. But so far in vain.

... "Scallywag" skipper David Witt used them for a cheerful betting show interlude

So Witt took a look around the press conference and asked the two skippers from Dongfeng and Mapfre, who are ahead of Team Brunel in the overall standings, for more details: "After our poor results in the last few stages, we naturally want better results for the final sections. But more importantly, I can't bet on Brunel's overall victory anywhere. Nowhere! I've been running all over Cardiff trying to find out how I can bet $10,000 on Bouwe to win the race. We love betting in Australia. So I thought maybe someone in this room, yes, more to the point, the two guys in the red shirts (meaning Dongfeng skipper Charles Caudrelier and Mapfre skipper Xabí Fernandez, the ed.) might take my $10,000 bet that Brunel will win? Well, does anyone want to take the bet? Charles, do you want to take it? You make a lot of money... "

Witt earned a lot of laughter for his little show interlude. However, neither Caudrelier nor Fernandez wanted to take part. Witt then shook his head: "I simply can't place a bet in Europe. What's going on here?"

The start of the harbour race in Cardiff was scheduled for 2.45 p.m. German time on Friday afternoon. The tenth of the eleven stages from Cardiff to Gothenburg begins on Sunday. Here to watch the live broadcast of the inshore race.

Sailing is like a constantly refreshing declaration of love for life."
