The Volvo Ocean 65 "Azzam"
The top favourite, the Emirates team Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Experienced skipper, well-rehearsed crew and a well-financed campaign

The yacht is called "Azzam", which is Arabic and means "destiny". The team is destined to further boost the Emirates' growing self-confidence in sailing by winning the Volvo Ocean Race. In the race two years ago, however, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing only came second last. Due to two abandoned legs with the Farr Yacht Design boat due to material faults, the team had no chance at the time. However, it was the only team that was able to prepare relatively continuously for the upcoming race.

The team
By winning the Round Britain and Ireland regatta in August against two other Volvo Ocean 65s, the team put themselves in the role of favourites. The crew is made up of internationally proven sailors. The only member from the Emirates is Adil Khalid, who already took part in the last race and thus set a milestone for Arabian sailing. He is listed as a trimmer and helmsman, an all-rounder.

The skipper
With two completed Volvo Ocean Races as skipper and, above all, two Olympic medals (470, Star boat), Brit Ian Walker, 44, is one of the most experienced and successful skippers competing off Alicante.
