Ocean Race Atlantic: Live coverage of the send-off parade from New York today

Boris Herrmann and Team Malizia are setting sail from New York today, heading for the Atlantic. The send-off parade will take the six teams from Brooklyn Bridge Marina out into the harbour, past the Statue of Liberty and out onto the open water. The new Malizia 4 will be making its racing debut. Herrmann describes his expectations for how the boat will fare against the competition in the YACHT interview ahead of the Ocean Race Atlantic.

A parade in New York, the start of a race on the Atlantic Ocean

The images off Manhattan mark the official start, but do not represent the beginning of the timed leg. The organiser has moved the start well out to sea due to marine mammal sanctuaries. The fleet is due to set sail on Wednesday 2 September at 12 noon CEST from a virtual line some 145 nautical miles off the coast of New York.

The fleet is sailing some 3,000 nautical miles to Lorient. Alongside Malizia, the line-up includes Team Francesca Clapcich powered by 11th Hour Racing, United by the Ocean, DMG Mori Sailing Team, Embrace the Challenge and MSIG Europe. Particular attention is being paid to the direct comparison between the two newest boats, Malizia 4 and DMG Mori Global One. The A look at Kojiro Shiraishi’s new IMOCA.

Each crew consists of two women and two men; there is also an on-board reporter on every boat. These reporters provide the material for the daily live broadcasts and supplement the A look at the favourites among the six teams.

Every day at 5 pm: the OnBoard Live Show

From Wednesday 2 September, The Ocean Race will broadcast a daily 30-minute live on-board show at 5.00 pm CEST. The programme combines footage and live links from the yachts with the latest updates on the race. For viewers, it’s the quickest way to make sense of the tracker data: which route are the frontrunners taking? How are wind shifts and weather fronts affecting the race? Where is a team losing miles or managing to extend its lead?

According to the organiser, the replays should be available on YouTube within an hour. Anyone who also wants to follow Malizia’s progress in the race will find the A preview of the Malizia 4’s first regatta debut the key background information.
