After the cancellation of the 1996 Olympics, the Flying Dutchman class was predicted to die. But that didn't happen. Especially in Germany, the fans held on to the demanding dinghy. A modern carbon mast has been allowed for a year now and this has made it even more attractive.
This is confirmed by the number of entries for the European Championships on Lake Neusiedl, which begin in two days' time (22 July - 29 July). There are 70 teams from 15 nations registered. The Danish former champion Jorgen Bojsen-Möller, multiple world champion, gold and bronze medallist at the Olympics, who now sails with his brother Jacob, is regarded as the favourite.
Also taking part are the multiple world champions from Hungary Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos, the reigning German champions and multiple world runners-up Hans-Peter Schwarz with Roland Kirst from Herrsching and Norman Rydge from Australia.
