A Briton went overboard in the Atlantic Challenge for Cruisers

The 47-year-old Englishman Phillip Hitchcock fell overboard during the Atlantic Challenge for Cruisers (ARC) and has since been declared dead.

Hitchcock was travelling alone with his brother David (52) on the Formosa 51 "Toutazimut" in 30 knots of wind and rough seas from Las Palmas to St. Lucia when the accident happened. Details are not yet known.

It is the first fatality in the 17-year history of the ARC, in which over 200 yachts are crossing the Atlantic again this year. Numerous crews had been directed to the scene of the accident by the organising World Cruising Club. But due to the choppy seas, the chances of finding the casualty in the water were very slim.
