New projects were successful in two of the three classes at the German Sailing Championships in the Inshore category during Kiel Week. The winners of the standardised classes have also been decided.

Only the "Chinook" was one of the favourites among the small ORCi-3 ships and confirmed this position with a strong series. The "Chinook" crew has plenty of experience between them. "We'll probably be celebrating our silver wedding anniversary together soon," explained crew member Dirk Johannsen, who was delighted to win the German inshore championship after winning the offshore title last year. "We worked a little on our sailing wardrobe beforehand and bought a lower-cut genoa so that we could get through the waves with more speed, which worked very well," said Meinhard Schmidt. Now the Flensburg crew on the X-332 around owner Johann Friedrichsen wants to have a say in the medals at the World Championships in September on their home turf. "Our knowledge of the area will certainly be an advantage," says Johannsen.

"Hochwürden" is German champion. With a newly assembled crew, the Dehler 35 won the Seesegel-IDMPhoto: Kieler Woche/OKpress "Hochwürden" is German champion. With a newly assembled crew, the Dehler 35 won the Seesegel-IDM

The world championship was not even on the agenda for the "Hochwürden" crew around skipper Philipp Rotermund (Flensburg), as the project with the Dehler 35 RS was set up very spontaneously. The ship was used by the shipyard for the first time at the offshore championship off Helgoland and has now been equipped with the new crew. "We don't yet know what will happen next, we just have to let it sink in. But the World Cup is an exciting thing," said Rotermund. First of all, however, the ship is going to Sweden and will be sailing round Gotland with a Swedish crew. For crew member Stefan Matschuck, the German title win was simply overwhelming: "We had to find each other in a very short time and worked like a good tournament team." The team constantly changed their trim during the championship days, but opted for a simple tactic: "We tried to tack as little as possible, even if the wind stayed away or shifted. That paid off in the end," says Matschuck.

"Great, fantastic!" is how Audi skipper Tim Kröger (Hamburg) described his feelings. "Above all, it's great that the new concept worked out." Six professionals faced nine amateurs who, according to the "a dream comes true" project, truly fulfilled a dream by winning the title on the TP52. "However, our guests were not completely inexperienced sailors and we told them straight away that we weren't going on a coffee run here," explained the professional sailor, who has already won many titles in his career, but no German championships. "We don't yet know how the project will continue. But what could be better for a sponsor like Audi if the idea works out like this," said Kröger. The title fight also exceeded all expectations for Ulrike Schümann (Berlin), who finished fourth at the 2008 Olympics in the Yngling. She was deployed as a tactician and initially had to get to grips with the navigation, but then found her feet on the short courses: "The learning curve went steeply upwards, but the fact that it would end with winning the title straight away is of course a great experience," said Schümann, who gave up her Olympic career this spring. "After my first retirement, I had to reorient myself and this was really a lot of fun."
