Ocean sailing for everyone! This is roughly the motto of the Baltic Sea Week, which has now been held for the third time in a row. Behind this euphonious name lies a new approach to ocean sports on sea-going yachts. Companies and organisations are given the opportunity to use participation in the Baltic Sea Week as a sporting company outing and/or team-building measure and is therefore not primarily aimed at high-calibre regatta sailors. The concept of the German Company Sports Championship seems to work. With 68 yachts starting, the event offered around 400 participants three days of high seas sport that they could touch and try out.
After Thursday was dedicated to training by skipper coach Uwe Wenzel, ambitious races were held on Friday and Saturday. The first event was a middle distance on Friday, which was completed in fresh winds and autumn weather. The company sportsmen started in three groups, the so-called "leagues", in order to do justice to the broad sporting character of the event in terms of content: Starting group I, which is organised by ORC club, is intended for ambitious crews who ideally already have sailing experience. Leagues II and III are for yardstick charter yachts and crews with a lower level of experience. However, the focus in all classes is on having fun.
The up & down races, which were scheduled for Saturday, began with a postponement of the start due to heavy rain. At the end of the day, however, two races could still be held and the participants were able to round off the event with drinks and live music at the get-together afterwards, which was attended by a wide variety of boats ranging from the chartered Bavaria with furling mainsail to the spartan, sporty J 125.
