Kiel's Lord Mayor Ulf Kämpfer, Mayor Peter Todeskino and architect Stefan Behnisch yesterday presented the Feasibility study for an Olympic Kiel-Schilksee 2024. The key points of the 88-page paper: a new hotel and the Olympic village will be built on the salt marsh, the harbour pier is to disappear and instead mobile grandstands in front of Schilksee and Strande will bring spectators as close as possible to the regatta courses. The number of new buildings is to be kept to a minimum.
The centrepiece of the event will be the multifunctional "sailing campus" building on the current site of the harbour master's building. The Isaf headquarters and the DSV will be located there and athletes will be able to train in the building. A new building would also replace the Olympic sailing village on the site of the current makeshift Salzwiese campsite. The mixture of apartment blocks and terraced houses will house athletes and coaches in 72 flats and 48 terraced houses during the Games. After the Games, the properties are to be sold to private individuals.
According to the plan, a hotel would be built on the site of the current Vaasa Hall with accommodation for Isaf officials and staff. It would also serve as a retreat for the athletes with medical care, physiotherapy and a lounge.
A new hotel is prominently located in the study at the interface between the harbour promenade and the Olympic Boulevard. During the Olympic sailing competitions, it will serve as accommodation for Isaf officials and employees and will house various lounge and meeting areas.
However, the floating grandstands at the spectator pier in the southern harbour apron of the Olympic Centre, further north in Strande and possibly also at Bülker Huk would not be permanent. The idea behind this is to bring the spectators as close as possible to the action on the water. 10,000 of the estimated 35,000 day visitors could be accommodated here.
However, before the first sailing fans can take their seats in the stands and the athletes can move into their accommodation in the Olympic Village, there are still a few decisions to be made: On 29 November, the citizens of Hamburg and Kiel will vote on the Olympic bid. A financing concept for the feasibility study should also be available by then. The IOC will decide in summer 2017 where the 2024 Olympic Games will ultimately be organised.
The feasibility study for the 2024 Olympics in Kiel-Schilksee is complete online ready.
