Norbert Sedlacek’s life’s work remains unfinished. The Austrian extreme sailor turned back off Iceland, having sailed past Spitsbergen on the first leg of his round-the-world voyage.

Austrian sailor Norbert Sedlacek is aiming, with the ANT ARCTIC LAB project, to sail non-stop and single-handed around the world across all five oceans. The planned route runs from Les Sables-d’Olonne (the starting port of the Vendée Globe) to the Arctic, round Spitsbergen, on to Antarctica and back to France. The project also serves as an extreme test for a sustainable, largely recyclable Open 60 yacht.

4th attempt2022The mission was aborted a few days after launch, near the south coast of Ireland.With winds of around 40 knots and rough seas, the boat collided with an unknown object. As a result, the starboard rudder mounting – or rather, the rudder suspension – broke.
5th attempt2023The experiment lasted just five or six days.Following a storm off the coast of Ireland, damage was discovered to the trim tab. The keel and its electronic systems were affected. What these experiments have in common is that the problems occurred in European waters or shortly afterwards. Sedlacek has not yet undertaken any expeditions to the remote southern oceans.

Reasons for the repeated terminations

1. An experimental vessel that is extremely technically sophisticated

The “Innovation Yachts” was not built as a conventional yacht, but as a test vessel. It is designed both to enable a non-stop circumnavigation of the globe and to demonstrate the durability of vulcanised fibres, recyclable composite materials, sustainable resins and electrical systems. This meant that several new or unusual technologies were deployed simultaneously under extreme conditions.

2. The length and difficulty of the planned route

The route covers around 32,000 nautical miles and about half a year at sea on its own. It will sail through the Arctic and the Southern Ocean – regions where repairs are virtually impossible. From the perspective of Norbert Sedlacek’s team, it therefore makes more sense to turn back at the first sign of a safety-critical fault, rather than risking the boat’s safety later on, far from any help.

3. A development project, not just an attempt to break a record

Sedlacek explicitly regards ANT ARCTIC LAB as an ongoing development process. After each failure, the affected components were analysed, redesigned and reinforced. In an interview with YACHT, he explained, in essence, that there was no point in setting out on a 35,000- to 40,000-nautical-mile voyage with a power supply that did not function reliably or a damaged system. The aim is not to lose the boat in spectacular fashion, but to prove that the concept works in the long term.

An analysis of Norbert Sedlacek’s sixth failure

At the sixth attempt in 2026 The evidence is considerably more scant than in the case of the earlier terminations. All that is known is:

  • The launch took place on 26 July 2026 in Les Sables-d’Olonne.
  • Sedlacek turned back on the first leg of his journey towards Spitsbergen, off the coast of Iceland.
  • The team wrapped up the project with a cryptic message.
  • No specific damage, component or medical reason has been mentioned so far.

The only thing that can be said with certainty at this stage is that this attempt, too, was abandoned before the actual high-risk areas were reached. The sixth attempt thus forms part of a series in which technical reliability and the limitations of an experimental boat design were the decisive factors.
