Two YACHT editors, one ambitious goal: Fabian Boerger and Ole Puls want to compete in the Vegvisir Race aboard the “Slimöv”, a long-keel yacht built in 1972. In the 76th edition of YACHT – the sailing podcast They explain how they are planning to take part as a low-budget project.

Sailing doesn’t have to be a luxury, as the two editors believe. Host Timm Kruse asks whether you can have just as much adventure with a little money, plenty of know-how and a decent second-hand boat as you can with an expensive carbon-fibre racer. The “Slimöv” originally belonged to Ole Puls’s grandfather and has been restored. It’s normal for things to creak a bit: “There’s always work to be done,” explains the sailor. He discusses the latest incident at the Wednesday regatta and explains what happened.

The regatta

The Vegvisir Race is a shorthanded offshore race. The regatta starts in Nyborg, Denmark, and follows two courses – either 100 or 200 nautical miles – through the Danish archipelago. With the 54-year-old Erria 25, two days at sea and a night-time leg are planned. Navigation, the weather and the treacherous shallows will make the race an exciting one for the sailors. The two YACHT editors reveal which destination they are heading for in episode 76.

Motivation

As well as embarking on this great adventure, the pair want to inspire others. Many sailors can benefit from small optimisations. The experts offer tips on how to achieve this. The ‘Slimöv’s’ participation in a regatta, which is usually attended by fast performance cruisers or carbon racers, is intended to show that competitive sailing is possible even on a tight budget. With the Erria 25, Fabian Boerger and Ole Puls are likely to stand out from the crowd, as they describe in the following.

The preparation

During the preparation phase, Fabian Boerger and Ole Puls are sorting out key issues regarding the division of roles and repair costs to ensure their participation in the Vegvisir Race runs as smoothly as possible. They have brought in YACHT editor Hauke Schmidt as an expert to carry out a thorough inspection of the boat. In doing so, the pair are aiming for a low-budget project and explain their cost-effective approach as well as the training sessions they are undertaking. The two guests also reveal whether anyone has already heard about their project.
