There was a major crash shortly after the start: the Imoca yachts "Holcim-PRB" skippered by Rosalin Kuiper from the Netherlands and "Allagrande Mapei Racing" skippered by Ambrogio Beccaria from Italy collided in Strander Bucht. Fortunately, there were no injuries in the collision, but the consequences for the teams were enormous.
But who is to blame? What went wrong? And how could such a collision happen in the first place? Host Timm Kruse and sailing expert Tim Kröger, himself an experienced Ocean Race participant, address precisely these questions.
Tim Kröger gives a first-hand account of what happened, analyses the sails chosen, the crews' decisions and the immediate consequences of the collision. What is particularly exciting is that he not only covered the regatta as a commentator on television, but was also in close contact with the teams - so he provides exclusive insights behind the scenes and reports on the repairs, the cooperation of the crews and the mood after the big crash. Tim Kröger's expertise conveys what goes on in a race of this calibre and how closely support and competition are linked in the Ocean Race.
The discussion also centres on technical peculiarities such as visibility obstructions caused by sails, defections and the role of on-board communication. It also looks at the challenge of reacting to such critical situations at lightning speed - and why even professional teams are not immune to mistakes.
Anyone who wants to know what happens after the crash, how the jury might decide and why professional preparation alone does not protect against incidents should not miss this new episode.
