The Vakaros Atlas is a high-performance regatta instrument for ambitious regatta sailors. It combines precise GPS data with extensive sailing functions in a compact housing. The manufacturer offers two versions: The Atlas 2 with a full range of functions and the Atlas Edge with limited functions for class-compliant use.
It is operated via a touchscreen. The Atlas 2 display can be freely configured to optimise the display of the desired data. Sailors can switch between different layouts for start, upwind or downwind. In contrast, the display on the Atlas Edge is limited to information that conforms to class rules.
The start line functions of the Atlas 2 are particularly useful for regatta sailors. It precisely calculates the distance and time to the line. The LED bar visually signals whether you are starting too early or too late. During the race, the data displayed helps with tactical decisions such as tacking manoeuvres or laylines.
The data recording enables a detailed analysis after the race. Sailors can evaluate their performance and identify potential for optimisation. The Bluetooth interface of the Atlas 2 also allows the integration of external sensors for wind, depth or boat speed.
Both Atlas versions have a 25 Hz GPS sensor for high-precision positioning. They weigh 175 g and measure 115 x 88 x 15 mm. The integrated rechargeable battery enables a runtime of up to 100 hours. Thanks to the wireless charging function and the supplied holder, the device can be positioned flexibly on board.
Both versions show magnetic compass heading, speed over ground (SOG), can record sailing data and class rules can be set. Atlas 2 also offers the option of integrating sensors via Bluetooth, a start line function with distance and time to the line and a backlight.
With the integrated lithium battery with a capacity of 4600 milliampere hours, a runtime of 100 hours or more should be possible. Both Vakaros regatta instruments can also be charged wirelessly.
Compared to smartphone apps, the Atlas offers significantly greater precision and reliability. The robust design and long battery life make it more suitable for everyday use than sensitive mobile devices. Compared to permanently installed on-board systems, it scores points for flexibility and ease of retrofitting. In addition, the Atlas display should remain easy to read even in bright sunlight.
At a price of €749, the Atlas Edge is the cheaper option for sailors who need a rule-compliant instrument for standardised classes. The Atlas 2 costs considerably more at 1099 euros, but offers the full range of functions for ambitious regatta sailors.
