They wanted to take the world by storm, but then things went wrong in the Indian Ocean. A new documentary shows how Lennart Burke and Melwin Fink still made Globe40 theirs. Over 90 minutes, the film "All in" sheds light on an extraordinary friendship on extreme courses, the ambition, the take-charge qualities and the courage of two young up-and-comers.

Sometimes courage is not rewarded. This is what Lennart Burke and Melwin Fink learnt on their first circumnavigation. They had started Globe40 full of hope and promise. On the first three sections of the double-handed circumnavigation, they were able to hold their own against the top favourites from France and Belgium, mixing it up and shining on several occasions despite some minor setbacks. After the first third, the youngest crew in the fleet was Promisingly in second place. Anything seemed possible in this two-handed race for Class 40 duos.

And then we set off on the first night of downwind VMG sailing in 20 knots of wind. And then there was a bang on board." Melwin Fink

A boomerang breakage and associated severe mast problems stopped the German duo in their tracks on leg three from La Réunion to Sydney. Still in the lead five days after the start, the two sailing and business partners then had to make the most difficult decision after the shock at sea: they abandoned the leg with irreparable damage at sea and limped back to the start harbour on La Réunion with gloomy thoughts. They knew that her dream of circumnavigating the globe was shattered. But giving up was out of the question.

You are confronted with beauty, but also with nature, which is simply always stronger than you." Lennart Burke

The further course of the skippers is well known: While the Globe40 fleet continued its circumnavigation, the Next Generation Boating team repaired its Class40 on La Réunion. Melwin Fink brought the boat back with a transfer crew via Cape Town across the Atlantic to the last stopover port of Recife. The duo are now on the verge of a comeback there, starts the final stage with the fleet on 29 March to Lorient.

Globe40: Dream shattered, but not let go

The dream of completing a circumnavigation may have been shattered. But the will of the two sailors remains unbroken. Only 27 and 24 years old, Burke, who was born in Stralsund, and Fink, who grew up in Bad Salzuflen, are packing their bags for their shipyard in parallel with the race around the world. Next Generation Boating in Hamburg with Next Generation Yachting Kiel, are now building up a second branch with great momentum. For the next three weeks, the two Hamburgers-by-choice will once again be focussing on Globe40.

Lennart Burke and Melwin Fink want to show what they can do once again after the serious setback and the rigours of their comeback. "It's going to be tough to compete for the stage win. But we want to fight and show what we're capable of," says Melwin Fink. The two sailors from Hamburg have often demonstrated what they are capable of in recent years. With modest means and big fighting hearts, they have constantly expanded their radius from the beginnings to the races in the Mini class, the Mini Transat, the switch to the Class40 and the promotion.

Quite a few people wondered along the way: How do they do it? How do the two young men keep their newly founded joint company, their projects, their partnerships and life in a constant beat together? Eight or nine days after the launch, Lennart Burke actually experienced "a bit of a mental breakdown". Tears were streaming down his face.

A "real heart project" for the filmmakers

In the retrospective of the documentary, Burke says: "I talked a lot about how we went full throttle for four months, sacrificed everything, didn't think about anything else: Just getting up and going to bed. And we worked in between. We tried to keep everything together: the company, ourselves, our relationship and the project. Somehow that overwhelmed you at the time."

Filmmakers Emilia Vaes and Hannes Cord now tell their story in the new documentary "All in". The film traces the extraordinary journey of the two up-and-comers in German sailing, showing how two young sailors pursue their dream of offshore sailing - and have to go beyond their limits in the process. Emilia Vaes and Hannes Cord realised this "real heart project" within two months.

For Social Media and Sponsoring Manager Emilia Vaes it was her first large-scale production of a feature-length documentary lasting more than one and a half hours. Self-employed for two years with her company Social Fascination, Lennart Burke's partner realised the project side by side with filmmaker and videographer Hannes Cord (Bæst Agency) realised.

Many changes of perspective in the film documentary "All in"

Her motivation for the mammoth project, which was realised in a very short space of time: "I am incredibly grateful to have been so close to this project and to have been able to document it. The project with Lennart and Melwin was one of the main reasons for me to become self-employed in the first place. It quickly became clear to me that I wanted to give something back and show what can come from this trust, the trust of Lennart, Melwin and all the people who shared their stories with us."

Emilia Vaes herself is active both in front of and behind the camera. In addition to impressive impressions of Globe40 and the protagonists in action, the documentary also features interviews with observers and supporters of the Next Generation Boating campaign. Two-time circumnavigator and two-time America's Cup participant Tim Kröger, who has been following Lennart Burke and Melwin Fink since their first steps in the Mini class, has his say.

The film also shows how the main sponsor Otto Wulff looks back on the achievements of the team at Globe40 and beyond. You can see and hear what mum Anette Burke and project manager Anja Fink have to say. Partners Emilia Vaes and Elena Schultheis also share their perspectives. The Globe40 sailors Lennart Burke and Melwin Fink themselves have their say in the most intensive and straightforward way.

Two young sailors share their passion

The two ocean stormers take their fans and viewers on a fascinating journey into the world of offshore sailing - giving deep insights into the highs and lows of their course in calm 1:1 interviews. Above all, they share their unwavering passion with the audience. The documentary also serves up powerful scenes from the Globe40. According to the motto "Do it one more time", Burke, Fink and their team Next Generation Boating are going to do it one last time at Globe40 on Sunday.

The starting signal for the final stage, which Team Germany will enter hungry after missing three stage classifications, will be given in the harbour of Recife at 2 pm. Click here for the preview, the favourites tip and an outlook.
