So far, of the four German applicants for the 2036-2044 Olympic Games, first Hamburg and then Munich had already decided on a sailing partner with Kiel-Schilksee. Berlin and KölnRheinRuhr had initially kept the choice between Kiel and Rostock-Warnemünde open. Now the die has been cast in Berlin in favour of a possible Olympic port in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The official starting signal for the bid to host the Olympic Games was given in Berlin on 30 January. The capital is next to Hamburg, Munich and the CologneRhineRuhr network one of four national bidders who want to bring the Olympics back to Germany between 2036 and 2044. To achieve this, the applicants must and want to first secure support at home and prevail in the national battle for the most promising bid.

Two sailing partners for the Olympic bidders

Since not all sports can be organised in the applicant cities themselves, they have sought out partners. This also applies to sailing. Hamburg was quick to commit to the Kiel-Schilksee Olympic venue, which had already been tried and tested twice in 1936 and 1972. Munich was initially open, but then also decided in favour of Kiel. Berlin and CologneRhineRuhr were also initially in favour of Kiel. both Kiel-Schilksee and Rostock-Warnemünde as possible sailing partnerscalled. In Berlin, however, the decision has now been made in favour of sailing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

At the official launch of their Olympic campaign in the Velodrom on 30 January, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, the Senator for the Interior and Sport, Iris Spranger, the Senator for Education, Youth and Family, Katharina Günther-Wünsch, and Berlin's Olympic Commissioner, Kaweh Niroomand, presented the first nine campaign motifs and the campaign logo to around 300 guests, including 150 children.

At the centre of the Campaign "Berlin wins with the Olympics" are slogans such as "Olympia is a Berliner.", "Olympia is a Berliner.", "We've prepared something: a world metropolis." or "On your marks. Hürdenlos.", which refers to the Olympic and Paralympic Games and inclusion. At the same time, the Berliners presented their partners for sports that cannot be organised in or directly near Berlin. These include sailing.

Watch Olympic sailing from the beach

On the homepage of the Berlin Olympic bidders, under the heading "Berlin+ Mecklenburg-Vorpommern", it says of the decision: "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was one of the first partners for the BERLIN+ concept. With its water-rich landscape, the state is predestined for sailing. Rostock-Warnemünde is a renowned location for the international sailing elite, which guarantees very special spectator experiences directly from the beach."

This is something that the participants of the Warnemünde Week, for example, try out and experience every year. This year's 88th edition will take place from 4 to 12 July. Following Berlin's decision, the Olympic sailing regatta will now be held in Rostock-Warnemünde if it is nominated as the German candidate to organise the Games. Rostock-Warnemünde offers a beautiful sporting venue and could meet the additional demand for accommodation with a cruise ship, for example.

Rostock-Warnemünde and the Baltic coast offer ideal conditions for sailing competitions on the water in our third Berlin+ partner state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern." Berlin+

In Berlin, the Olympic bid enters the next round in May/June with the decision of the House of Representatives on the bid concept. Approval for the CologneRhineRuhr concept will be sought from all participating NRW municipalities on 19 April. Hamburg is expected to vote on 31 May on whether the city should pursue its Olympic bid. The people of Munich have already said yes.

The national applicant final

4 June remains the deadline for all active bidders to submit their bid concepts to the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). On 26 September 2026, the DOSB General Assembly will elect the national candidate for the international Olympic bid. This will also decide which sailing area will be allowed to compete to host an Olympic regatta.
