Whether on site in Marseille, from home or from your holiday paradise: There are many ways to experience the Olympic Games live with its ten sailing competitions. German fans have a front row seat at ARD and ZDF

Watch on site

Those who can be in Marseille for the Olympic summit of sailors, windsurfers and kiters are in a good position. In July, tickets for access to the Olympic harbour were still available from 24 euros. Entry tickets including a hospitality package (https://tickets.paris2024.org).

As the sailing Olympians hold their competitions outside in the bay of Marseille, fans could alternatively look for a spot on the Plages du Prado and its beautiful sisters. From there, the races can be seen from afar while enjoying the beach.

Be there via the Internet

If you're smart, you have your mobile phone or iPad with you and switch on the live broadcast. However, if you are abroad, in this case in France, you will need a paid VPN service to receive the German-language Olympic broadcasts if you want to watch the German Olympic athletes in particular. Even if you speak and understand French well, the hosts' TV programmes will naturally focus on Les Bleus.

Up close and personal: The YACHT live ticker

The YACHT live ticker is the quickest way to get the most important information about sailing at the 2024 Olympics in France if you are not there in person or have access to the TV stream. Sports expert Tatjana Pokorny will be on site for YACHT, providing immediate results, anecdotes and exclusive insights from the Olympic Games in this live ticker.

The Hamburg journalist, author of nine books and sailing correspondent for the German Press Agency (DPA) will be reporting on her ninth Olympic Games in Marseille. Tatjana has reported on all America's Cup editions since 2000, all Ocean Races since 1993/1994 and the Vendée Globe with Boris Herrmann. Her motto: "Sailing is like life under a magnifying glass, its protagonists are so exciting, intelligent, refreshing and strong role models for society."

On TV and live stream

However, those who want to watch the Olympics from home can also do so on their TV screens with ARD and ZDF. ARD and ZDF share the Olympic studio on the Seine with a view of the Eiffel Tower, while both broadcasters coordinate the transmissions and programmes in the national broadcast centre at home in Mainz. The majority of the commentators for Olympic sailing also work from here.

In the joint project, ARD and ZDF realise up to ten parallel online live streams of all types of sport per day. The promise: All finals, all competitions with German participation and all international highlights can be watched online. Including the action in the Bay of Marseille. The live streams will also be available "on demand" after the broadcasts.

Both public broadcasters have their sights set on Olympic sailing. Their commentary teams will alternate between providing perspectives on the images from Marseille. All races held on the TV track can be watched live online in the stream: on 28 July on ARD at sportschau.de, on 29 July on ZDF at sportstudio.de, then in this order and alternating daily.

There will initially be summaries on television: on 28 July on ZDF, on 29 July on Ersten, then again alternately. The live TV coverage of the races will be decided at the time. As a rule of thumb, we can assume that it will certainly be in the direction of the medal race, but perhaps even earlier.

Expert commentators

For ZDF, Nils Kaben reports from the Olympic capital Paris and partly from Marseille. Bundesliga record winner Tobias Schadewaldt will be reporting from the Mainz headquarters for the second programme. The 49er Olympic silver medallist from 2012 will commentate on the live streams. ARD has brought the Olympic 49erFX silver medallist from Japan on board to join Peter Carstens in Mainz with co-commentator Susann Beucke.

Eurosport and Discovery+ (for a fee) will also be showing Olympic sailing. All times can be found in the broadcasters' current programme schedules. As a rule, the so-called sessions are scheduled from 12 noon to 7 pm on the twelve planned regatta days.
