Wherever you look during these nine days from 20 to 28 June: boats of every kind everywhere! Foil-equipped catamarans, racing Olympic skiffs and international dinghy classes, together with pleasure boats, seagoing keel yachts, traditional vessels and naval cutters, provide a snapshot of sailing from yesterday, today and tomorrow. You’ll be in good shape if you can keep track of it all amidst the colourful hustle and bustle.
The heart of the sailing competition is the Kiel-Schilksee Olympic Centre. This is where most of the yachts are moored in the harbour, and where sailors and fans come together. Racing takes place on a total of 12 courses. Long-distance races for the big boats can extend as far as Langeland. The race committee decides on a daily basis who starts when and where.
Thanks to new broadcasting technology, Kieler Woche TV will broadcast from almost all the courses on the Outer Fjord (with the exception of the Seebahn at Stollergrund and the Foxtrott on the east bank). This means that the Hotel course is no longer the exclusive TV course. However, full races will only be shown live on TV during the Olympic section. From Thursday onwards, during the international section, a mix of TV highlights, social media content and live acts on the main stage will be shown.
