As promising as the start to the second league weekend of the season was, the following two days were poor in terms of racing. Things got off to a promising start on Lake Starnberg on 1 May with six flights. In the evening, the organisers were still delighted that they had managed to get almost as many races in the box in just one day as they had on the previous day. at the first league clash two weeks earlier in the same precinct over the entire weekend. They had no idea that nothing would work for two days afterwards. But they suspected it.
The guest appearance in the Bavarian Yacht Club's picture-book sailing area ended on Sunday with Friday's results. In between, there was a festive May atmosphere, many, many card games, the odd Aperol enjoyed in a smart traditional costume outfit and sailing bags full of money and hope that did not materialise in sporting terms. The fact that the hosts were celebrating their traditional May celebrations with the start of sailing at the same time as the league was getting underway also lifted the spirits of the league sailors, for whom no racing was possible for two thirds of the event on this weekend in May without wind.
The league teams must have shown what they are capable of on day one. The teams from the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (1, 1, 3, 1, 1, 2) and the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee (1, 3, 1, 3, 2, 2) managed the course programme best. They won the showdown in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. In the process the eight-time record champions With a total of just nine points in the Starnberg account, the team from the Alster even put a whopping four points between themselves and second-placed Münchner Yacht-Club. The Blankenese Segel-Club (both 13 points) sailed to third place, level on points with the Munich team.
Fourth place among the first division teams was enough for the Joersfelder Segel-Club to defend its lead in the standings after two events with a total of five points ahead of the rapidly rising Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (7 points) and Bodensee-Yacht-Club Überlingen (11 points). The German club champions from 2024 have dropped down the table: Mühlenberger Segel-Club did not make it past 16th place on Lake Starnberg, initially slipping back to ninth place with 18 points.
Mats Schönebeck, Henrik Peters, Moritz Gießelmann and Ferdinand Pfund got back on the road to success after finishing sixth in the season opener. "The season is long and I'm delighted that Mats, Henrik, Moritz and Ferdi have made a very solid start. Like all the years before, we will rotate a lot this year. Three more helmsmen will be deployed with their teams over the next three match days," says NRV Club Manager and Bundesliga Team Manager Klaus Lahme.
In the 2nd Sailing Bundesliga, the battle for victory on Lake Starnberg was a close one: VSaW came out on top in the six races for each team with a total of 12 points against Segel-Club Ville (13 points) and Lübecker Segler-Verein von 1885 (14 points). Helmsman and Ilca 7 ace Nico Naujock, Frederike Westphalen, Anna Krömke and Carolin Schaaff successfully competed for the capital city crew.
"We're very happy with second place on average," said Nico Naujock, summarising for his team. Like most of the crews, the Berliners had already realised before the first starting signal that a windy weekend was not on the cards. "After last week's forecast, we were almost expecting a one-day event - that's why we wanted to do as many races as possible on Friday," said VSaW helmsman Nico Naujock.
The Ilca-7 helmsman and his crew had a plan for the scenario: "We wanted to sail consistently, and in the end we were very happy with an average 2nd place. The wind was typical for Starnberg: very gusty, very shifty. We definitely had fun - anyone who has seen our TikToks knows that a relaxed attitude is inevitable."
VSaW made a big leap forward in the second league table with its victory, improving from eighth to second place. Lübecker Yacht-Club defended its lead in the second league table after its opening victory with seventh place in the second Starnberger-See round, still one point ahead of the Berlin team.
After eight and six rounds instead of the hoped-for 16, the sporting hopes of the league sailors now rest on the upcoming events. And that is the Bundesliga in its 14th season The event is characterised exclusively by inland waters. The third event will also be held in Kiel from 10 to 12 July in the inner fjord near the Hotel Kieler Yacht-Club.
This will be followed by the meetings on Hamburg's Outer Alster at the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (31 July to 2 August) and the two Wannsee summits: from 18 to 20 September, the Potsdamer Yacht-Club will play host. The final will be hosted by the Seglerhaus am Wannsee club from 15 to 17 October.
