Alinghi man Grant Simmer on new challenges for the sailing heroine

"The America's Cup could be a good option for Ellen MacArthur in the future." This view was expressed by Grant Simmer, technical director of the Swiss Alinghi team, in a radio interview with the BBC.

After her successful solo non-stop circumnavigation, the sailing world is wondering what the young Brit will do next. Simmer attests: "She would be a great inspiration to any team she would join." Her determination and ability to manage a project would be a great asset.

However, Simmer does make one caveat: "Of course, this only applies if she doesn't want to do everything on her own as before."

You can read more about Ellen MacArthur and her spectacular circumnavigation of the globe in the next issue of YACHT (issue 5/05, in newsagents from 23 February).
