On 17 January, there will be two opportunities to talk to Brad Butterworth, one of the most prominent figures in the current America's Cup action. At 9.00 am and 9.00 pm, the team website www.alinghi.com invites you to a live chat.
New Zealander Butterworth, born in 1959, is preparing for his fifth America's Cup with the Alinghi team. He made his Cup debut in 1987 as a tactician on KZ-7, having previously skippered in the 1983 and 1985 Admiral's Cups.
Since 1987, he has been involved in all of New Zealand's Cup engagements, in 1992, 1995 and 2000. Team New Zealand won the Cup with him in 1995 and defended it in 2000.
As helmsman of the "Propaganda" he won the Admiral's Cup with the New Zealand team in 1987. In 1989/90 he took part in the Whitbread Race, the predecessor of the Volvo Ocean Race, as watch leader on "Steinlager II" under skipper Peter Blake and won. In 1993/94 he sailed the Whitbread Race on "Winston" as co-skipper with Dennis Conner.
